Barb,
Thanks for commenting. And good for you for researching your options on food. Innova is one of the few commercial foods I approve of. You don't say where you are located, and your dog's case certainly seems complex. have you consulted a holistic veterinarian? You can look at www.ahvma.org, www.viim.org I also recommend Dr. Bill Kruesi, who will do a consultation with your local veterinarian if you cannot travel to him in VT. www.crvetcenter.com

Best wishes for your dog's health!

Finally someone who understands my problem with these "prescription" diets! My malinios has diarreah that is generally stress related but has been exasterbated by his current condition catagorized as idiopathic effusion. All the vets I have seen do not want to hear that the diarreah gets worse as fluid accumulates in his chest and insist he simply has sheperd type GI problems which can be cured by the Iams Prescription low residue diet. After calling Iams for their product analysis, I switched to Innova's large breed formula which I think has similar properties but without me having to feed grains and chemicals. I have been reading up on pro-biotic formulas but there seems to be wide variation on dosages and if pet products actually deliver like human grade products. Do you recommend an all in one pet product or maybe a human grade Saccharomyces boulardii / slippery elm combo? I am aware this is just a bandaid right now considering his effusions but the top vets can't seem to offer any help.

Laurie,

I love your website! There is so much useful information on it. I wish your practice was closer I'd have my dogs to you in a minute for wellness care. You are very progressive and it is so needed in the veterinary community.

As well...Thank you for posting such a nice page on our benefit. I hope OUR journeys will benefit others and ultimately help others.

Best,
Judy Schor

I saw Rachel Rays show and mommy and I laughed so hard. I would never eat that stuff, it's junk food and I don't eat junk.

When mommy eats junk I bark at her (would you believe she ate FRENCH FRIES the other day, eeewwww potatoes are not healthy!) I won't eat anything that is not organic, I can smell the difference (can't everyone?).

I do have a good recipe to share A HEALTHY ONE, okay a little high in sodium but it's an appetizer so just remember a FEW is okay!

Easy Doggie Duck Appetizer

Ingredients:
Chilled Ground Duck (mommy cheats and uses canned free range, super healthy brand chilled)
Hormone Free prosciutto
Vitamin powder (use appropriate amount for your dogs weight)
Dried Broccoli sprouts(use appropriate amount for your dogs weight mommy uses 3 /4 a tsp for me and I weigh 12 lbs she grows them herself and dries them so they are chemical free)

Mix vitamins and Dried Broccoli sprouts together
Take a bite sized chunk of duck “pâté”
Roll the pâté in the vitamin/broccoli mix
Wrap with prosciutto (use as just enough to go around the ball, remember use sparingly it’s high in sodium)

(I think sometimes mommy hides my heartworm pill in here but it’s yummy so who cares).

Remember to always use a good quality vitamin, that is organic and has human grade ingredients I bet the nice vet here could recommend a good one, she seems nice!)

So skip the Rachel Ray stuff and go for the gold, it’s easy!

Consider Neem products -- Azmira makes one, as well as other companies. Also consider any stresses he may be experiencing, physical or mental. Any environmental changes that could enable fleas to proliferate? Consider things like diatomaceous earth to treat your yard.

If you are still having problems, investigate gentler options for parasite control. Safe products do exist, but are not at the front of the shelf as the “BIg Pharma” products are.

My great dane is 3rd generation unvaccinated and partially raw fed (his choice, not mine). He is age 6. For the first time in his life I have found fleas and flea dirt on him. What safer products/options can you suggest to repel his "parasitic passengers?

Thanks for your kind words!

Not having seen your dog, I cannot make specific recommendations. However, for my own dogs, I use turkey and duck necks as AM meals, and they clean teeth nicely. Note that they must be fed raw. A small dog might do better with chicken necks. I feed necks 3-4 days a week. I do not brush my dogs' teeth.

I also use marrow bones for chewing. I boil them for 5-10 minutes so I can push the marrow out. They are very hard, and hold up to eager chewers. See http://www.thewholisticvet.com/MakingBones.html

Hope that helps!

Great website! I really need your help. I just had my dog put under to have her teeth cleaned! How traumatic for her. I'm never doing it again. I am determined to brush her teeth every day. She is on an all natural, homecooked diet, but what kind of dental chew do you recommend? Thanks so much in advance. Sharon Rosman
